 Did my Refrigerator Mother spoil?

Last week I just fed my mother because I was going to be painting Friday and didn’t think it would be good for my mother to “breathe” in that paint smell. I did everything like normal. Same water, same flour, clean spatula. Today when I got my mother out and was going to feed her and take some out to do bread for tomorrow. It looked really bubbly and kinda separated. Way different that the normal thick with a few bubbles here and there. Then I was like well maybe the fridge just got warm and it just grew a lot, but when o stirred it I noticed a smell... and then when stuck the spatula up to my nose to get a better whiff, ewww it smelled somewhat like baby spit up/vomit. I don’t know if something got in it that I didn’t know was on the counter or something. I am assuming it’s gone bad. I didn’t feed it yet because I was going to wait and see what you think. But It seems to have gone bad. I don’t know what could have done it though. I did everything the same... we occasionally stick different things on top of it in the fridge, but it’s never hurt it before and I don’t see why that should make a difference since it has that nice red lid.

Yeah we kept on saying things about my "mother" dying, or "she's rotten". Then we were like, well that sounded really bad. lol. Its a good thing we weren't out in public, people overhearing us talking would have been so confused!

There has to be some kind of bacteria in there causing the smell, and making it discolor so quickly. Such a shame to have happen. As displeasing as the smell is, at least nature sends out clues when something is amiss.

I think the water should be fine, as long as it's kept in sealed containers, and you go through it at a decent clip.

I'm happy to help anytime, and always want to be available when things like this happen. It's silly, but I really do feel like I'm mourning for your "mother" right now (the term mother sounds morbid in this context).

This is what my mother looked like this morning when I fed it. I didn't look at all like my mother normally looks. I am guessing there must have been something on the counter when I fed my mother last week. We keep our counters clean, but there must have been something on there I didn't know about...

When I stirred my mother it had this pink looking water under it, totally not normal. My mom was siting at the kitchen table about 10 feet away and she could smell the mother from there. It had the same very strong smell. At first when I pulled it out of the proofer I thought maybe it was going to be ok beside it seemed to smell normal, then when I uncovered it you could really smell the spoiled smell.

I think the picture of my fridge mother shows how it really spoiled. That was after I fed it last night and it had only been in the fridge 10-12 hours. It shouldn't have discolored like that so quick, right?
Oh yes and last night when I fed my mother it was so runny to get the 1/2 cup out of it I had to pour it into the measuring cup. Normally I have to get a couple scoops with the spatula.

I did have one thought. Do you think when I start feeding my mother I should keep like just one gallon of water in the fridge? Right now i have been buying purified water but i only have a 3/5 gallon (can't remember off the top of my head) jug that I keep in the pantry. I have been just refilling my glass water bottle as I need it from that. It's been working fine so far. I smelled the water last night and it smelt like water, (no smell). Our pantry stays about 68-73 degrees. In the winter it stays more of the same temperature as the rest of the house. In the summer if mom doesn't keep the door open to it (there is no air vent in the pantry) it will get a little warmer than the rest of the house. If you think I should start getting just one gallon at a time and keeping it in the forge let me know.

I think when I get the time I am going to start a mother with my Organic white wheat berries I have and do a fresh ground flour mother. But that will probably be around summer. It is sometimes difficult for us to fine a couple months were we won't be out of town at all. Thanks for what you are doing for me in the meantime You are so helpful!! Thank you for being so available!

Oh no! If judging by looks alone, I would say your mother is fine, because a little separation/discoloration can happen, but the smell you mentioned...that doesn’t sound good at all. Does it have any sour smell at all? Awhile back, I posted a picture of some surface discoloration on some of our mothers. I’m going to see if I can find it, and I’ll post the link here. Based on the smell you describe, I would say that there is something wrong with it.

This is so unfortunate...It shouldn’t be because you skipped a feeding. I do this regularly with all of our refrigerator mothers because we keep 8, and it’s just not possible to bake with each mother every week. Again, I’m really sorry.
