Posted - Mar 21 2018 : 06:18:57 AM It’s a snowy, cold day here in West Virginia. My husband works for the DOH and had to leave at 3:30 this morning to plow snow. After I got him off to work, I was looking at my starter on the kitchen counter. I have two more days before it’s time to bake again but as is my nature... I broke the rules. I scooped out 1 1/2 cups of the starter in a separate bowl. To it I added 1 cup of freshly ground Kamut, 2 tablespoons of honey, 1/2 teaspoon salt and a handful of dried cranberries. I scooped it into my cast iron biscuit pan (the same one that Mary Jane has and I loved so had to order). I covered it lightly and put it by the wood stove to rise while I went out to do the morning milking and chores. When I came in, they had nearly doubled in size. I preheated the oven to 400 and baked them for 15 minutes. They were amazing! The inside was all bubbly and soft and the crust was chewy and crunchy at the same time. Next time I will try raisins, as the cranberries were so tart and so is my batter. Raisins will add some sweetness. |

Posted - Mar 21 2018 : 4:49:48 PM Rebecca, I second everyone's comments. I want one of those for my breakfast tomorrow! I was secretly hoping that once people got their mothers established, they'd experiment exactly the way you did. I knew, without a doubt, I couldn't write a book with endless variables and sometimes-this and sometimes-that. Way too confusing!!!! So many of the sourdough books I've come across seem to wander around forever like that. So do a lot of the beekeeping books I've come across over the years. I contend that when you're showing people how to, say, keep a cow, you have to give them a clear set of blueprints without bringing up every single but-if or maybe-try-this-when-you ...
Speaking of cows, I just had to share.
Maggie, who is due any moment now with her first calf (she's been arching her back for a couple of days now),
got some extra pampering from my grandgirls last night.
Stella made sure we didn't neglect any of our other youngsters (Maybelle and Lizzy).
Maggie kept trying to kiss all of us,
So, I urged the girls to start giving her some boundaries,
and instead, offer to scratch her neck each time. Now, we have a cow who asks for love looking like this.
