For a before and after comparison, I thought I'd share pictures of a new white flour mother, before it has had a chance to develop wild yeasts, and an active, developed white flour mother. At the end of day one, your mother will be a thick, flour-water paste, like the photos below.
Here, just to help show the thick consistency, I scooped some onto a spatula.
During the weeks you spend capturing the wild yeasts from the air in your environment, your mother will transform in to an active, bubbly mother with a pleasant, sour smell. As you mother matures, it will lose its paste-like consistency.

Hi All,
Feeding Mother requires 3/8 flour and 1/4 cup water.
I have found after looking high and low a 3/8 cup just isn't out there, and if you don't have a spare 1/8 cup coffee scoop here is an alternative.
6 TBSP = 3/8 Cup Or 1/4 Cup + 2 TBSP = 3/8 Cup
Ashley and MaryJane, if there is a better place for this post, please let me know. |

Darla, thank you for posting the equivalency information. It sure would have been handy if a 3/8 cup was a standard size, but no luck. And naturally, these amounts had the best flour-to-water ratio out of all that we tested. That's why we settled on the 1/8-cup coffee scoop (in product descriptions, 1/8 cup and 2T are used interchangeably). If you can find a 1/8-cup coffee scoop that's best, because you'll only need to count out 3 of the same-sized scoop at each feeding, but the other options you posted work too! Here's a link to the coffee scoop we use: http://amzn.to/2oSXCOb |

Ashley, about a month ago I ordered 4 of the 1/8 cup metal coffee scoops from Amazon for all my cans of Chai Latte and etc. This was just a helper for those who may not have one around. |

I can't easily find the 1/8 cup scoops either, so I'm planning on buying a Dreamfarm Levoop and setting it at 45mL so that two scoops makes 3/8 cup. |

I had an assortment of protein powder scoops. I found that the 39cc scoop works -- two scoops = 3/8 C |
